Welcome

Talk is cheap! We are a bunch of developers who have been working together for years. Each one of us has subjected at least one other (if not all others) to an onslought of opinion on all matters concerning software development. We can all talk ... the question is: Are we willing to commit our ideas/opinions/suggestions to paper? Lets see ... The aim is to create a knowledage base of ideas, advice, suggestions and howto's for all matters concerning software development.

Day CQ5 (CMS) and JBoss Portal (continued) : Application Portlet Discovery

How do you make applications portlets available to page authors in CQ5, so page authors can design/author the complete site without requiring application releases?

CQ5 has a concept of "components" that are the building blocks for a page. The page author uses these to build a page. For example to drop an image onto a page the Page Author would use the image component. When an application portlet is developed - as part of the release process you'll need to deploy the portlet… Continue

Day CQ5 (CMS) and JBoss Portal (continued) : Synchronised Menus

The Portal Server has it's own means of generating menus and CQ5 has a different mechanism. How do you synchronise the two?

Menu generation for CQ5 is very simple and flexible. You can create your own menus by creating a JSP in the repository that traverses your page structure and dynamically generates the menus. Each time a new page is added or ordering of sibling pages is changed then the JSP will regenerate the menus accordingly. Styles can be applied to make it look… Continue

Day CQ5 (CMS) and JBoss Portal

Most dedicated CMS are very good at managing static content. The challenges start when you need your CMS to manage a site that has embedded web applications hosted by an Application Server. In this blog we will look at some of these challenges using concrete examples of JBoss Portal and CQ5 CMS from Day.

The usual approach for CQ5 is to host the website directly from its "publish" repository using an Apache module. This is more than enough for mostly brochure-ware sites, but some… Continue

Agile Project Metrics #2

Agile Project Metrics should be at the level of abstraction of the target audience but answer the following questions at all times:

- Where are we?
- Are we on track?
- Are we in trouble? Why?

Agile Project Metrics #1

This is first of a series of blogs to explore the importance of metrics in an Agile project. The approach to a specific Agile project is often described as emergent. In the sense that we don't start off with a prescribed approach in mind but we adopt as our understanding of projects grows and it's profile and key challenges emerges. Agile metrics can be used as an aid to understanding a project's profile (informational metrics) and it's challenges (diagnostics metrics). The following is a list… Continue

Sandro Mancuso replied to Armin Keyvanloo's discussion 'Splitting epics (large stories) and managing to keep them independent'
A story should be Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimable, Small and Testable (INVEST). However, this is not always the case. The approach that I take when I come across a large story is to sit down with the product owner and go through it,…

Mashooq Badar replied to Armin Keyvanloo's discussion '3 scenarios/reason for not using Agile'
The first scenario: The question to ask here is; what is perceived to provide "complete clarity" up front? If detailed up-front requirements and design is what’s required then it should not stop us from adopting agile principals. It…
